Home Scoliosis rehabilitation program questions and answers

Scoliosis is a progressive disease that is most active and aggressive during the adolescent years in which a child is experiencing periods of rapid growth, so it is imperative that an ongoing scoliosis rehabilitation program is consistently performed on a daily basis.

The single most important factor in the continued long-term success of scoliosis stabilization is a high compliance rate with the home rehab program. It needs to be recognized from the very beginning that the home scoliosis rehabilitation is a long-term commitment and must be continued to ensure stabilization of the scoliosis during the periods of rapid growth. The single greatest factors in compliance to a long-term home rehab program are a positive patient attitude towards the program and a low confusion rate. Keep it fun/rewarding and keep it simple. While the patient will need to dedicate a fair amount of time and effort into the initial scoliosis rehabilitation program during the curve reduction/correction phase of treatment, they can often maintain their spinal stability with relatively consistent time and effort once the curvature has been stabilized.

This is an example of a typical daily scoliosis rehabilitation treatment plan of a patient in the curve reduction/correction phase of treatment, followed by a weekly scoliosis stability routine.

Morning or immediately after school:
Wear spinal weights for 15-20 min and perform customized spinal exercise program: 25-30 min (total) in morning or after school

Evening before going to bed:
Wear spinal weights for 15-20 min and perform customized spinal exercise program
Spinal molding program in bed 15-20 min: 30-40 min (total) in evening
**Required usage of the scoliosis traction chair may add up to an additional hour of rehab time to daily schedule

Generally this routine is required for at least 4-6 months before scoliosis stability is achieved; At that point, the patient may only need to complete 3 spinal weight and spinal molding sessions per week to maintain their reduction/correction results.
