Every day my office receives requests of information packets on a better way to treat scoliosis than ineffective scoliosis braces and highly invasive scoliosis surgeries. I respond to each and every one of these requests with a personal email directly from me inquiring about more detailed information, so we can customize their information packet to best suit their case’s individual needs. Every month my office mails out hundreds of scoliosis treatment reminder post cards to these same individuals hoping to shake them out of the mind set of complacency and getting them to take action before their child’s spine pays the price. Some heed the warning, most do not.
Invariably a much higher number of these information packet seeking parents and patients contact my office 6 to 12 months after making initial contact with us. Generally, they call my office staff in a state of panic stating how everything seemed like it was stabilizing when they contacted our office initially, but now the orthopedic surgeon says she will need scoliosis fusion surgery or we’ll end up in a wheel chair some day (which 50 year follow up studies of un-treated scoliosis patients proves to be nothing more than a false scare tactic).
The amazing part of this is that these parents aren’t negligent or uncaring; to the contrary, they are generally very upset and riddled with guilt for not doing something sooner, even when given the opportunity many months before. The question remains, why didn’t they do something about preventing their child’s scoliosis from reaching the point in which it “requires” surgical intervention?
In these difficult economic times, lack of financial resources comes to mind rather quickly, and perhaps this is indeed the case sometimes, but that doesn’t explain why they are sitting in my office now, 8 months after requesting a free information packet from http://www.treatingscoliosis.com. Surely not all of their financial situations dramatically improved in such a short period of time.
Then I thought , maybe people aren’t aggressively attacking their child’s scoliosis condition with a scoliosis exercise based treatment plan, because they are too busy; yet they make time to get into my office almost immediately when the orthopedist makes the surgery recommendation.
It appears that parents are being lulled into complacency with hopes the scoliosis spine will simply stop progressing on its own or that the arbitrarily selected scoliosis braces will in some way prevent the inevitable need for scoliosis surgery. In either case, this type of “reactive” approach to scoliosis treatment is a complete disservice to the child and parent alike; resulting in lost opportunity to alter the nature course of the scoliosis condition and decreasing the likelihood of an optimal treatment outcome for the patient since every scoliosis treatment (with the noted exception of scoliosis fusion surgery) demonstrates a higher success rate when applied to mild scoliosis as compared to severe scoliosis.
The answer’s one seeks in life are rarely found on the guided tour. Don’t be afraid to step off the well worn and beaten path to challenge the status quo and demand a better way to treat your child’s scoliosis, BEFORE it reaches the vaunted “surgical threshold”. Be pro-active when it comes to scoliosis treatment. Your child (and their spine) will thank you for it.
